Edwin H. and Augusta Lowell Garthwaite papers, 1881-1937.

Contains correspondence, family history documents and a manuscript about mining in Rhodesia. Most of the correspondence is between Edwin and Augusta in 1893 to 1894 when Edwin was in Mexico and his family was in Oakland. There is also correspondence with family and some correspondence regarding Edwin's career including a 1906 letter concerning the political and economic situation in Rhodesia. Family history documents include memoirs of Edwin and Augusta from the early 1930's, genealogical research done in the 1990's by granddaughter Loel M. Buckley and some ephemera. Also includes writings concerning the life and funeral of Cecil Rhodes.

Edwin Hatfield Garthwaite, a mining engineer, was born in San Francisco, Calif. on Aug. 5, 1857. He attended the University of California, Berkeley for two years and finished his education in Freiberg, Germany in 1881. He worked in Mexico, Northern California and in 1895 went to work in Rhodesia for over ten years. Edwin Hatfield Garthwaite married Augusta Lowell on Aug. 30, 1890, in Oakland, Calif.
